Sports Writers Association has played a key role in highlighting the positive image of the province through sports, says Adviser for Sports

PESHAWAR: Adviser to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sports, Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand, has said that encouragement of sports journalists is essential because sporting events would have little impact if they were not properly covered by the media. He said sports journalists have played a vital role in projecting the positive image of the province through sports and are delivering positive stories to the public which inspires children and youth and fosters a healthy competitive environment.

He expressed these views while addressing an awards distribution ceremony organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Writers Association to honor sports journalists. The event was attended by Director General Sports Tashfeen Haider, Secretary General AIPS Asia Amjad Aziz Malik, Additional Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Asghar Surrani, Regional Sports Officer Ahmad Zaman, Sports Writers Association President Asim Shiraz, journalists and officials from the Sports Department.

On the occasion, awards were presented to journalists associated with print, electronic, and digital media, including Amjad Aziz Malik, Shahabuddin, Imran Yousafzai, Shakeel-ur-Rehman, Sheeba Haider, Nadir Khawaja, Ehtesham Bashir, Siraj Arif, Ali Hazrat Bacha, Shahid Afridi, Shehzada Fahad, Irfan Musa Zai, Irshad Ali, Zeeshan Kakakhel, Adnan Shahid, Alishba, Abdul Qayyum Afridi, Qadir Khan, Wajid Shehzad, Amjad Khan, Shaukat Hussain, Arshad Dar, Kaleem Qureshi, Usman, Farhan Khalil, Hashim Khan, Muhammad Riaz, Muhammad Humayun, Umar Qayyum, Muhammad Atif, Muhammad Tahir, Zia-ul-Islam, Abdullah, Shahid Khan, Asim Shiraz, Arsalan Tariq, Muhammad Hayat, Uzair Khan, Arshad, Shiraz, Tahir Mahmood, Rizwan Sheikh and Shah Zameen.

Taj Muhammad Tarand said that the Sports Department continues to take practical steps for the promotion of sports across the province. Over the past period, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Under-21 Games were successfully organized, attracting around 5,000 male and female athletes from across the province. Opportunities were also provided to both male and female athletes to showcase their talents in ice hockey events held in Chitral.

He added that the merged districts hosted their games for the first time, while girls from the merged districts were given the opportunity to participate in a skiing event at Malam Jabba. He further stated that Inter-Madaris Games, Minority Games, Games for Persons with Disabilities and Transgender Games had also been organized successfully.

The adviser noted that the National Junior Championship is currently underway in Peshawar, with athletes from across the country participating. Traditional games have also been organized in Swabi, Haripur, and Mardan. He said the objective of these events is to provide positive recreational opportunities for people of all ages and to create platforms for young athletes to display their talent.

Tarand further said that after a gap of 20 years, the National T20 Cricket Championship was organized in Peshawar. A Pakistan Super League (PSL) match had also been scheduled for the city however, due to the prevailing situation related to Afghanistan, the United States and Iran, PSL matches were confined to Lahore and Karachi. He expressed hope that efforts would be made to bring more PSL matches to Peshawar next year.

He reiterated that the government is taking measures to promote every sport and provide athletes with better opportunities.
