PESHAWAR: The air in Bajaur still carries the echoes of anti-terrorism operations, yet on this very soil, a scene of color, light, and enthusiasm came alive. The “Battle for the Right to Freedom” Independence Sports Festival was not just a celebration of athletic talent—it was a bold statement to the world that peace, sport, and hope can triumph over adversity.
Organized under the auspices of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Department, supervised by the District Sports Officer, and held under the special patronage of Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali Khan, the grand festival took place at Bajaur Sports Complex.
From traditional games to modern Olympic events, the festival showcased a diverse range of competitions in which young athletes displayed remarkable skill, passion, and determination. Despite the tense atmosphere in the district—marked by ongoing operations and curfews—these sporting activities served as a powerful message of hope and resilience for the people.
The opening ceremony drew a large crowd, including Additional Deputy Commissioner Shahid Rafiq Gandapur, Assistant Commissioner Ali Nawaz, Parliamentary Secretary and MPA Ajmal Khan, the District Sports Officer, local political and social figures, and citizens from across the district. Patriotic songs performed by children added a wave of excitement and pride to the occasion.
Addressing the ceremony, ADC Shahid Rafiq Gandapur said,
In difficult times, maintaining sporting activities is the best way to guide the younger generation towards positive engagement. This tradition will continue in the future.”
The District Sports Officer thanked all institutions and participants, emphasizing that the people of Bajaur are unmatched in their resolve and courage, and that sport remains the strongest message of peace.
One of the festival’s most memorable moments came during the martial arts competitions, when a young athlete captivated the audience with his unwavering focus and confidence. Every strike and movement he made carried the message that the children of Bajaur are not defined by the shadow of fear, but by dreams of peace, a bright future, and progress.
This powerful display reaffirmed a timeless truth: sport, education, and constructive activities are the guiding lights that can lead a society towards peace and prosperity.
