TORONTO: Sha’Carri Richardson will get a chance to defend her 100m crown at the 2025 World Championships after making it through as one of the fastest losers with all big guns qualifying.
Sha’Carri Richardson had an agonizing wait before sealing her place in the final of the 100m after qualifying as one of the fastest losers at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo in today.
Running in the Heat 1, Richards was slow off the blocks and paid the price as she failed to secure the top two positions that would have seen her seal an automatic place in the final.
Africa’s fastest woman Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith won the semi-final heat in a time of 10.94 seconds with Jamaican Shericka Jackson second in 10.97 seconds as Richardson finished third in 11.00 seconds.
That meant she had to wait for the other heats to complete to see if she made it as one of the two fastest losers and luckily, she made it through.
Meanwhile, Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann-Fraser Pryce has a chance to sign off with a medal after sealing her place in the final from Heat 2 following a second-place finish behind Olympics champion Julien Alfred.
Fraser-Pryce clocked 11.00 seconds behind Alfred, who managed 10.93 seconds, in first place, for the two automatic qualification tickets to the final. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Tina Clayton completed the automatic qualifiers from Heat 3 after finishing first and second respectively.
Following the conclusion of the rounds, none of the third placed finishers in Heat 2 and 3 had clocked a better time than Richardson, and she sailed through alongside Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, the other best loser, after clocking 11.02.
