TORONTO: Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha saw his hopes of winning the 10,000m title dashed at the finish line as he lost out to little-known Frenchman Jimmy Gressier.
Frenchman Jimmy Gressier spoiled the party for Ethiopians as he was the surprise winner of the 10,000m gold at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday.
Gressier appeared out of the blues to steal the title right under the nose of Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, who was poised to win his first world title.
The Frenchman found strength in the final stretch to beat Kejelcha to the gold medal after the Ethiopian thought his only rival would be Sweden’s Andreas Almgren.
Gressier won gold ahead of Kejelcha as Almgren settled for bronze in Tokyo. Kenya’s Ismael Kipkurui missed out on the podium after a fourth place finish.
