SHIGAR: Gul Noor Tambet has made mountaineering history by becoming the first Turkish woman to summit K2, the world’s second-highest peak. According to a press release, Gul reached the 8,611-metre summit at 4 pm on Monday, August 11. She had arrived in Pakistan in June, first climbing Tirich Mir before setting her sights on K2. Despite severe weather conditions in July that forced many climbers to retreat from base camp, she continued her ascent.
Her successful summit adds to an impressive record that includes the Seven Summits and more than 30 other high-altitude climbs across Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Nepal, Argentina, and the United States. Gul was also the first Turkish woman to scale Mount Everest.
Beginning her climbing journey at the age of 17, Gul now balances her mountaineering pursuits with her role as a marketing professor at San Francisco State University in the United States.
